Rally driver
Vatanen began his international career in 1976. In 1980 he won the Acropolis Rally, his first World Championship run. He won the World Rally Championship 1981 together with co-driver David Richards in a Ford Escort. Later, he turned to the desert rally, drove for Peugeot and Citroën and won a total of four times the car rating of the Dakar Rally. In 1988 he secured the overall victory at the Pikes Peak hill climb in the USA with a new track record.
