The VW Golf GTI 16V type 19E was homologated on March 1st, 1986 with Nr A-5295 in group A. This specific Golf II was constructed by VW Motorsport and first registered after individual approval by the German technical inspection authority TÜV Hanover on February 13rd, 1987 with license plate WOB-DW 87. This is the car of Jochi Kleint / Manfred Hiemer with entrant Volkswagen Motorsport for the German Rally Championship 1987. Assistance for the events was provided by the Volkswagen dealership Willi Nies KG in Braunschweig.
With overall wins in the Sachs Winter Rallye, the ADAC Rallye Deutschland and the Sachs Rallye Baltic combined with a 6th place in the Rallye Baden-Württemberg, 4th place in the Rallye Hessen and 5th place in the 3-Städte-Rallye they achieved despite technical retirements during Sachs-Rallye Franken and Hunsrück Rallye 3rd place overall in the German Rally Championship 1987. With a total of 33 stage wins he outperformed Harald Demuth (30), Walter Röhrl (28), Armin Schwarz (27) and Sepp Haider (21).
Outside of these championship events Kleint / Hiemer were deployed by Willi Nies KG, Braunschweig for the Saarland Rally 1987. Wolfgang Nies / Harald Siems ran this car 1987 in the Rallye Rund um die Sulinger Bärenklaue.
1988 Kleint/Hiemer drove this car in the German championship Saarland Rallye to 5th place and Nies/Siems in the Weser-Egge-Rallye to 6th place overall.
1989 the car was sold to the private driver Hans-Ulrich Wiegel and on January 26th reregistered with license plate BS-KC 387. Next owner war Armin Holz who registered the car on April 29th, 1992 with license plate CE-HA 69 and won the German Rally Trophy in 1992 and 1993.
Additional owners were from February 16th, 1994 Hermann Wittor with EN-BF 232; from February 9th, 1998 Andreas Dingert with TR-DA 136 and from March 31st, 2006 Peter Palmer with HD-DW 970.
The car was acquired by the current owner in summer 2018. Following extensive restoration in 2019 by Ihle Motorsport the car is fully functional once again and will be used occasionally for demonstrations, first with driver Jochi Kleint / Manfred Hiemer on Eifel Rallye Festival 2019.
